Defend Dying Christians in Pakistan

264,198

Signatures //

Pakistan has been listed as one of the most pernicious persecutors of Christians.

Pakistani Christians are tortured, raped, and burned alive. Some are falsely accused of blasphemy and sentenced to execution by hanging because of their faith.

Others face mob violence and governmental abuse and injustice.

This deadly barbarism – this monumental injustice – must end.

We’ve mobilized our offices on the ground in Pakistan, at the U.N., and on Capitol Hill to aggressively fight back. We are directly defending numerous Christians in Pakistani courts.

Save the lives of persecuted Christians before it’s too late. Take action with us.

Story

Pakistan has been listed as one of the most pernicious persecutors of Christians in the world. Mob violence, burning alive, rape, false accusations of blasphemy, unjust death penalties, delayed justice, coerced conversions to Islam, and police torture are just a few of the pervasive forms of persecution and discrimination inflicted upon Christians in Pakistan.

While the Pakistani authorities do not direct persecution, they are sometime unwilling or unable to stop a whole host of injustices inflicted by extremists against Christians.

Some of Pakistan’s worst persecution is waged through its blasphemy laws. An example of Pakistan’s brutal injustice toward religious minorities can be seen in its handling of the 2013 mob attack on the Christian neighborhood called Joseph Colony where a mob of Muslims burned and vandalized about 200 Christian homes after a false allegation of blasphemy against one Christian was made. While the Muslim attackers were let go scot free, the Christian man originally accused of blasphemy was sentenced to death.

About 40 people are currently on death row or serving life sentences under Pakistan’s extreme and barbaric blasphemy laws that, among other things, provide the mandatory death penalty for defaming the Prophet Muhammad’s name.

One example, Asia Bibi, a Christian mother of five, has been on death row for almost eight years. In 2009, Asia was accused of blaspheming the Prophet Muhammad’s name – an accusation levied against her for offering a Muslim coworker a drink of water (because, as a Christian, she is considered “unclean”). A trial court sentenced her to death in 2010. An intermediate appellate court, upheld her conviction after four years. Asia is still waiting for the Supreme Court to hear her appeal.

In addition to these outrageous, and even deadly outcomes, Christians and other minorities are daily persecuted and humiliated through hundreds of incidents of sectarian violence resulting in hundreds of casualties.

Even though the United States gives Pakistan the most foreign aid of any nation, the conditions for religious minorities in Pakistan remain barbaric. The list of brutal injustices goes on and on. These horrific incidents are happening each and every day.

We’ve mobilized our offices on the ground in Pakistan, at the U.N., and on Capitol Hill to aggressively fight back. We are directly defending numerous Christians in Pakistani courts.

Our international affiliate, European Centre for Law and Justice’s office, the Organization for Legal Aid (OLA), has mobilized to defend the rights of a 3-year-old girl named Sahiba – the daughter of a Christian woman – who was brutally raped by a Muslim man.

In addition, we’ve secured a number of victories for persecuted Christians in Pakistan. We achieved justice for an elderly Christian woman, Bashiran Bibi, who was assaulted by an influential Muslim man for refusing to clean his house. In yet another case, we successfully defended a little Christian girl, pressing criminal charges against a Muslim family for stripping and brutalizing eight-year-old Parwasha.

This deadly barbarism – this monumental injustice – must end.

As we battle in Pakistan’s courts and at the U.N., Christians in Pakistan need your voice. Save the lives of persecuted Christians before it’s too late. Take action with us.
