Feb. 10Stories That Demand Action:

Last week I spoke on a panel at the International Religious Freedom (IRF) Summit in Washington, D.C.—a global gathering that brings together advocates, policymakers, and legal experts from around the world who are on the front lines of defending religious freedom. Save Ahsan Masih

Save Ahsan Masih

Another innocent Christian has been thrown behind bars and sentenced to execution by hanging under Pakistan’s blasphemy laws because of his faith in Jesus. We’re taking urgent legal action to overturn this injustice before it’s too late. Last year, we reported that an angry Muslim mob in Pakistan had burned down over 20 churches and 80 homes of Christians in Jaranwala after two Christian brothers were accused of desecrating the Quran. The only evidence presented to the police was a...

Save Shahzad Masih From Death

Save Shahzad Masih From Death

A trial court in Pakistan sentenced a young Christian man to execution by hanging over a false allegation of blasphemy against him (a MINOR at the time of the alleged offense). Our Pakistani affiliate, the Organization for Legal Aid (OLA), is representing Shahzad Masih, the young Christian man, who was a 16-year-old minor when he was arrested and charged under the country’s infamous blasphemy law, section 295-C of the Pakistan Penal Code. Section 295-C states: Whoever by words, either...

Save Christian Ayub Brothers

On June 8th, 2022, the Lahore High Court, Rawalpindi Bench, upheld the death sentence of two Christian brothers in a blasphemy case. Christian brothers, Amoon and Qaisar Ayub, were accused of posting blasphemous material on the Internet. Our international affiliate the European Centre for Law and Justice’s (ECLJ) office in Pakistan represents the younger of the two brothers, Amoon Ayub. As discussed here , in June 2011, a Muslim man informed the police that he was browsing the...

Persecuted Pakistani Christians

Christians Tortured, Raped, Burned Alive, & Executed

Pakistan has been listed as one of the most pernicious persecutors of Christians in the world. Mob violence, burning alive, rape, false accusations of blasphemy, unjust death penalties, delayed justice, coerced conversions to Islam, and police torture are just a few of the pervasive forms of persecution and discrimination inflicted upon Christians in Pakistan. While the Pakistani authorities do not direct persecution, they are sometime unwilling or unable to stop a whole host of...

Parwasha

8-Year-Old Girl Kidnapped, Stripped, and Beaten in Pakistan

In Pakistan, Muslim attackers stripped Parwasha, an eight-year-old Christian girl, and then beat her, and left her naked on the streets—all for a crime she didn't commit. This assault and public humiliation occurred because a Muslim family sought retribution against Parwasha's maternal uncle. Parwasha's uncle, Iftikhar Masih, was invited by his Muslim girlfriend, Samina, to her house late at night. Because interreligious marriages or romantic relationships are a taboo in Pakistan,

Asia Bibi

Christian Mom Sentenced to Death for her Faith

On October 31, 2018 – nearly 8 years after she was first convicted of blasphemy – Pakistan’s Supreme Court overturned Christian Mom Asia Bibi’s death sentence and acquitted her of all charges. She is now free. On October 16, 2014, an appeals court in Lahore Pakistan has upheld the death sentence for a Christian woman, Asia Bibi, who was falsely convicted of "blasphemy" (speaking against the prophet Muhammad) in 2010. As the lone Christian household in her town, she was targeted for...

Christian brothers threatened with death for trying to work

We are representing a Christian family against a Pakistani corporation that launched a campaign of persecution against its Christian employees. The Christian brothers, Asher and Robin, former employees of corporation were forced to resign at gunpoint after new Muslim management took over. Asher started working for the company as a ticket collector in 1999. By 2010, he was an operations manager. New Muslim management, however, decided to remove all high-ranking Christian employees. Karma Patras

Saved from false blasphemy accusations

Our Pakistan office successfully represented Pastor Karma Patras who was falsely accused of blasphemy after he gave a sermon at a memorial service preaching about the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ. A Muslim attending the service mistook Pastor Patras’ words and accused him of blasphemy against Islam. Pastor Patras was arrested on October 15, 2012 under section 295-A of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) that punishes “deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings...

Desecrating Cemeteries

Christian Cemeteries Used For Farmland

When Christians are persecuted, not even the dead are free from harm. In Pakistan, Muslims have desecrated Christian cemeteries, transformed them into farmland, and have allowed animals to graze over buried Christians. In at least one case, Muslim gangs have threatened to kill anyone who buries a family member in the local Christian cemetery. Our office in Pakistan is working with churches to secure their members' final earthly rest.

Imran Masih

Life in Prison for Allegedly Burning a Koran

Masih’s ordeal began on July 1, 2009, when he was cleaning his bookstore. After gathering useless papers and old books, he prepared to burn them, a common method of disposing of trash in the Third World. One of the books appeared to be an old textbook on the Arabic language. Fearing he might dispose it of improperly, Masih consulted his Muslim neighbor, Hajji Liaquat Ali, who owns a building materials business adjacent to Masih’s bookstore. Ali told Masih to dispose of the book by...
