2018 Victories: Christian Mom Asia Bibi Saved From Execution After Pakistan’s Supreme Court Overturns Wrongful Blasphemy Conviction

ACLJ Staff Writers

Decemeber 10th, 2018

This is the latest installment in a year-end series looking back at some of the numerous victories by the ACLJ in 2018.

For more than four years, the ACLJ has relentlessly fought for the life of Christian mother Asia Bibi, engaging in a multi-pronged legal advocacy campaign across the globe.

Asia Bibi, a Christian mom of 5, was convicted in 2010 under Pakistan’s archaic blasphemy laws, and sentenced to hang. Asia’s only crime was offering water to Muslim co-workers after she had made the water “unclean” as a Christian by drinking from the same cup.

We took Asia Bibi’s plight to the world, urging the U.N. to get involved. We sent legal letters directly to Pakistan, demanding her immediate release. And more than 800,000 supporters signed our petition for her freedom.

After countless hours, and an aggressive legal advocacy campaign that spanned the globe – including through our office on the ground in Pakistan – Asia Bibi’s conviction and execution sentence were overturned.

Our team in Pakistan was present when, after a nine-year legal battle, the Pakistani Supreme Court finally overturned Asia’s conviction and death sentence for blasphemy.

This is a tremendous victory, but the fight is not over.

We continue to urge the government of Pakistan to provide necessary security to Asia and give her safe passage to a place of peace and security. And we ask each and every one of you to please continue to pray for Asia Bibi’s safety just as you rejoice at her freedom from execution.

Our office in Pakistan continues to represent dozens of Christians in vital cases. We will not stop fighting to protect the persecuted.

To help the ACLJ continue to have the resources we need to make these victories possible and continue these fights, please consider making a Tax-Deductible donation to the ACLJ through our year-end Matching Challenge. Your gift will be DOUBLED dollar-for-dollar through the end of the year.
