It’s evil rarely seen. In February , over 70 Christians in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) were bound , marched into a church, and beheaded. Local church leaders are devastated : “We don’t know what to do or how to pray; we’ve had enough of massacres.” This method of execution was intentional, designed to put terror in the hearts of...More

ACLJ Files Written Submission at the U.N. To Defend Endangered Christians in Afghanistan One Year After Biden’s Incompetence Allowed the Taliban and ISIS To Return

Jordan Sekulow

September 7th, 2022

It’s been one year since President Joe Biden’s botched withdrawal of U.S. military forces from Afghanistan. One year since the Biden Administration removed our troops and resources BEFORE making sure all civilians and allies, and American citizens, were safe. And, of course, one year since President Biden’s incompetence allowed the Taliban to slither out of its hole in the ground and seize control of the country, posing an existential threat to the safety of every Christian, young woman, and U.S. ally in Afghanistan.

Our President may have abandoned Afghan Christians but the ACLJ will not. We just submitted a critical written report to the U.N. Human Rights Council (HRC) through our European affiliate – the European Centre for Law and Justice (ECLJ) – demanding action to protect defenseless Christians and young women and girls from the brutal Taliban.

Despite its disingenuous claim of being a “kinder, gentler” Taliban, we know what this bloodthirsty militia will do. The Taliban has been going door-to-door looking for Christians to kill and unmarried women to take captive. ISIS and al-Qaeda are resurgent. Christians are hiding in their homes, fearing what the Taliban will do to them – a genocidal persecution.

As we stated in our written submission:

Taliban rule threatens the lives of Christians, particularly converts from Islam, as “[i]n the Taliban’s militant interpretation of Islam, Christian converts are considered apostates who deserve death.” As a result, “[t]he Christian community remains underground and hidden from the glare of public scrutiny, operating as a loosely connected network of house churches because Afghan Christians are direct targets for severe persecution.” The Taliban has been utilizing tactics to uncover Christians, such as “confiscating suspected Christians’ phones and looking through messages and contacts.” In fact, the Taliban was “actively tracking down Christians from existing intelligence, even going door-to-door to find them.”

Christian men, women, and children are in grave danger. Remember, we told you earlier this year that a persecution watchdog group gave Afghanistan the auspicious designation of the most dangerous place in the world to be a Christian.

In fact, Afghanistan knocked North Korea out of the top spot this year for the first time in decades. As we told you previously:

Open Doors USA, a persecution watchdog group, just released a brand-new report, where it ranks countries for their persecution and oppression against Christians, and for the first time in two decades, North Korea has been displaced from the top position. Under the Taliban, Afghanistan has quickly risen to number one – a rare instance where taking first place should bring about shame and result in international intervention.

The reality is time is running out for Christians, unmarried women, and even U.S. citizens still trapped inside Afghanistan. As if the hard-fisted rule of the Taliban wasn’t enough, ISIS has risen from the ashes as well, and has begun a series of attacks in Afghanistan, targeting innocent Christians. While both are Sunni Islamist groups, they are not exactly allies either, which only increases the danger these two factions pose to Christians, as we pointed out in our U.N. HRC filing:

Christians and other religious and ethnic minorities in Afghanistan are under threat by two main groups, the Taliban and ISIS. While both are Sunni Islamist groups, their objectives differ and are at odds with one another. However, the one thing they seem to agree on is the death and destruction of the Christian community and other minorities, such as members of the Hazara, Shia, and Sufi communities.

In addition to religious minorities, schools and women and girls are also under attack by these groups. From August 2021 to June 2022, approximately 700 civilians have been killed and 1,406 wounded in Afghanistan. Most of the casualties were caused by the Islamic State Khorasan (ISIS-K) against “ethnic and religious minority communities in places where they go to school, worship and go about their daily lives.”

I personally delivered a critical oral intervention, via video, to the U.N. Human Rights Council (HRC) demanding immediate intervention to protect Afghan Christians and defenseless young women from the vicious Taliban. No one deserves to be attacked or murdered because of his or her faith.

These are our Christian brothers and sisters. We have a Biblical mandate to fight for their lives. But we need the international community to stand together and take swift action to protect them and bring these terrorist militias to justice.

We also filed an urgent FOIA request against the Biden Administration, demanding all records pertaining to the President’s disastrous Afghanistan withdrawal. As usual, the Biden team ignored our FOIA, so we have now filed a lawsuit against FOUR Biden agencies. If the Biden Administration won’t cooperate with us, we’ll see them in federal court and let a judge decide. For one year, the Taliban flag has flown over the former U.S. Embassy in Kabul. It’s shameful. Our leaders must be held accountable too.

Together we can help SAVE CHRISTIAN LIVES. Sign our URGENT petition.
