In the Absence of Leadership From President Biden, ACLJ Delivers CRITICAL Oral Intervention Asking U.N. To Defend Endangered Christians in Afghanistan

Jordan Sekulow

October 1st, 2021

The situation for Christians in Afghanistan has become extremely dire. Thanks to the weakness and incompetence of the Biden Administration, which has abandoned them to the will of the Taliban, it is likely about to turn deadly.

I just took direct action on the world stage, delivering an urgent oral intervention to the U.N. Human Rights Council (HRC) through our European affiliate office, the European Centre for Law and Justice (ECLJ), asking for international action to defend Afghanistan’s Christians, as well as women and other religious minorities, all of whom face grim abuse and persecution.

As I stated in my critical presentation to the global body:

Christians in Afghanistan fear the same genocidal persecution suffered by Christians in Iraq and Syria – that they will be hunted down, abused, and even killed because of their faith. Christian organizations have even warned believers not to leave their homes for fear of what the Taliban will do to them.

The Taliban has a demonstrated history of violence and human rights abuses against Christians and women. The Taliban has oppressed religious minorities, denied education to girls over the age of 10, and treated women as property.

Despite the Taliban’s early promises to respect women and offer amnesty to those who had previously opposed it or aided the U.S. – such as the Afghan army and interpreters – as we’ve already reported, a Taliban spokesman has since announced a return to its harsh interpretation of Islamic law. This includes barbaric practices such as public executions of women and minors to strengthen its rule by fear. During my intervention, I clearly emphasized, in no uncertain terms, the immediate danger the Taliban presents:

Refugees, U.S. citizens, and other foreign nationals are now trapped, unable to flee. The Taliban is going door to door throughout the region looking for Christians to kill and unmarried women to take captive.

As we’ve warned ever since President Biden hastily pulled out our U.S. troops, abandoning our Afghan allies, Christians, and even American citizens, the Taliban has no interest in respecting human rights. It is a savage group with terrorist ties that wants to see its own twisted interpretation of Shariah law become the governing rule of not only Afghanistan, but, if it gets its way, the entire world.

This is exactly why I cautioned the members of the HRC against viewing the Taliban as any form of legitimate governing organization, because it is the furthest from it:

The Taliban is not a peaceful government body and should not be treated as such. It is a dangerous, radical militia that places no value on human rights and poses a legitimate threat to Christians, other non-Muslims, and women. Swift international intervention is imperative.

It has become abundantly clear that the Biden Administration is not equipped or willing to intercede on behalf of these endangered Christians in Afghanistan, especially after it abandoned Americans in order to appease terrorists.

In fact, we recently told you how President Biden had the audacity to stand before the United Nations and spin this human rights crisis he created in Afghanistan as some kind of a win for his Administration. We’ve actually submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request demanding all records pertaining to Biden’s disastrous exit strategy in Afghanistan that allowed the Taliban to seize control of the country in the first place. The Biden Administration must be held accountable for this debacle.

But right now, the lives of countless innocent Christians are in real danger. That’s why I personally delivered this critical message to the United Nations. We need the international community to step up and take action to save these Afghan Christians before it’s too late.
