Senate Minority Abandons American Pastor Saeed Abedini, Forces Iran Deal on America

Jay Sekulow

September 10th, 2015

Today, a minority in the U.S. Senate filibustered the Resolution of Disapproval of the Iranian nuclear deal, blocking the bill from receiving an up-or-down vote in the Senate.

It was the single most important foreign policy debate in decades and President Obama’s allies in the Senate wouldn’t even allow a vote, in essence forcing the Iran nuclear deal on the American people.

The American people – who overwhelmingly oppose the Iran deal and oppose it in even greater numbers the more they understand it – deserve better than this from our U.S. Senate. Only 1 in 5 Americans support this bad deal made much worse by abandoning American Pastor Saeed Abedini and the other wrongfully imprisoned Americans in Iran.  In fact, a large bipartisan majority of the Senate opposed the deal.

Yet President Obama’s partisan allies are filibustering to stop a vote on the deal. Why? So President Obama doesn’t have to further tarnish his poor foreign policy record by vetoing a Congressional bill firmly disapproving what he believes is his greatest foreign policy achievement.

In the cloture vote this afternoon, 42 U.S. Senators filibustered to defend the deal and President Obama.

Who are these U.S. Senators that voted for the deal that will send billions to the largest state sponsor of terrorism and pave the way for a nuclear weapon in the future?

Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI)
Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO)
Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT)
Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ)
Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA)
Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH)
Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA)
Senator Thomas Carper (D-DE)
Senator Robert Casey (D-PA)
Senator Christopher Coons (D-DE)
Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL)
Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA)
Senator Al Franken (D-MN)
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY)
Senator Martin Heinrich (D-NM)
Senator Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND)
Senator Mazie Hirono (D-HI)
Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA)
Senator Angus King (I-ME)
Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN)
Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT)
Senator Edward Markey (D-MA)
Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO)
Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ)
Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR)
Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD)
Senator Christopher Murphy (D-CT)
Senator Patty Murray (D-WA)
Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL)
Senator Gary Peters (D-MI)
Senator Jack Reed (D-RI)
Senator Harry Reid (D-NV)
Senator Bernard Sanders (I-VT)
Senator Brian Schatz (D-HI)
Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH)
Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI)
Senator Jon Tester (D-MT)
Senator Tom Udall (D-NM)
Senator Mark Warner (D-VA)
Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA)
Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI)
Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR)

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives is voting overwhelmingly to oppose this deadly deal with Iran, even challenging whether the Obama Administration has held up its legal obligations to submit all information to Congress for review and approval.

This is yet another step towards implementing this bad nuclear deal with Iran while abandoning Pastor Saeed and the other Americans.

Congress can still act. You must stand in the gap for Pastor Saeed.

If one of your Senators voted to support the deal, contact them immediately.  GOP Senate leaders are promising more votes and more chances for your elected representatives to do the right thing.

Sign our petition to reject the deal and save Pastor Saeed.

At the same time we are continue our multipronged strategy for Pastor Saeed’s freedom, turning to the U.N.  In just days the President of Iran will be on U.S. soil – where Pastor Saeed belongs – for the U.N. General Assembly, and we’re urging U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to meet with him and pressure Iran for Pastor Saeed’s release.  Join our massive letter-writing campaign at BeHeardProject.com, where nearly 200,000 letters have been written by Pastor Saeed’s supporters already.
