This week, we deployed a team of five government affairs professionals and attorneys to the United Nations to advocate on behalf of persecuted Christians and religious minorities around the world. Because of the special consultative status we have through our international affiliate, the European Centre for Law & Justice (ECLJ), we are able engage in this important way. In fact, the very reason we worked to obtain this status was to give voice to the hundreds of millions suffering under religious persecution around the globe. In many cases, we are able to shed a light on abuses that might otherwise go unnoticed at the U.N.

We used this week as an opportunity to engage in conversations about the state of religious persecution around the world. We shared with Ambassadors and delegates a compilation of our most recent written submissions to the United Nations, including Universal Periodic Reviews (UPRs) for Bolivia, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Kazakhstan, and Myanmar.

On this particular trip, we reached out to the delegates from every Latin American country. We highlighted our commitment to enforcing human rights norms through the application of domestic law. We were also able to highlight specific examples of people—many of them our clients—who have had to suffer from oppression because of their beliefs.

This work will be used to build a coalition at the U.N. that will work against religious persecution. Our work will continue throughout the year, and we will continue to engage through our written reports. But we will also be boots on the ground at the United Nations to give voice to our reports.
